The monument was built in 1832 in memory of the third Duke of Bridgewater who once lived in Ashridge house.
TOP TIP - Great walking trails through Ashridge National Trust park and walk into Aldbury village. Outdoor cafe at the Monument, selling hot drinks, rustic meals and cakes. On nice days the monument opens and you can go up for a small fee. When clear you can see Canary Wharf, London from the top.
The Ashridge Estate (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ashridge-estate) is 5,000 acres of National Trust countryside and woodland just on the edge of Berkhamsted. There are many places to explore by foot or by bike. The monument is the most popular part of all, with a coffee shop, gift shop and an opportunity to climb up to the top of the monument itself for some terrific views of the countryside.
