Oxford Castle & Prison A large partly ruined Norman medieval castle alongside the prison that closed in 1996 and redeveloped as a visitor attraction.
Oxford Castle is now a Museum where you can climb the Saxon St.George's Tower and enjoy its breathtaking 360° panoramic views, descend underground to visit the crypt, explore the Debtor's Tower and part of the old prisons or just decide to relax at Malmaison Luxury Hotel in the other part of the Castle.
The castle is a museum, hotel and night spot, with many restaurants and bars.
When William the Conqueror invaded England and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Oxford Castle was marked by the Normans as the ideal place for a motte-and-bailey castle. Norman baron Robert O’Doyly took it upon himself to build this castle. Over time, our site transformed from a castle into a prison. Today, after one millennia, Oxford Castle & Prison is a visitor attraction with a story to tell. Book online in advance and please note that there is no parking is available on site. They recommend a Park and Ride or local car park for your visit.
