The view of Kyoto at night from the top is spectacular. And you may see Kenkun shrine, founded by Oda Nobunaga. But the best is Obon, when they are burning the characters on the mountains.
Funaokayama is a park surrounding a hill in north Kyoto that locals consider a mountain. The park is popular with local dog walkers and is mostly devoid of tourists. It has an ancient feel to it and was home to a important military installation in the 1500s that is sometimes refered to as Funaokayama Castle. However, the castle wasn't on a grand scale and was more of a fort. It's still possible to see traces of the fort today. The summit of the hill affords views of the city. It's amongst the most popular spots in town to view Daimonji.
