The iconic square has some of the most ancient and historic tower houses dating back to the XII century. Right after the French Revolution maybe the most (hard and) prestigious university of the country has been built the Scuola Normale Superiore. At night most of the university students of the city gather on its benches and stairs.
The second most famous square in Pisa, this was the center of the political powers of the ancient maritime republic of Pisa in the medieval times. Integrated in the building of the library of the Scuola Normale Superiore is also the ‘Torre della Fame’ where Ugolino died for his betrayal narrated by Dante Alighieri in the Divina Commedia. The big building with the frescoes facade (Palazzo della Carovana) is where the Scuola Normale Superiore (founded by Napoleon Bonaparte) has now its historical site. Among others some famous alumni of this University are three Nobel prize winners (Enrico Fermi, Carlo Rubbia, Giosuè Carducci), two Italian presidents (Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Giovanni Gronchi) and recently a Fields medal winner (Alessio Figalli)
