Grade II Listed. Settle Station Water Tower is the only survivor of eight watering places for steam locomotives on the Settle-Carlisle railway. During 2011 the water tower was restored and adapted to be a private house, retaining all of its original features. The work was televised for Channel 4's Restoration Man series. Various relics from the railway can be seen in the grounds of the Water Tower including a Navvy Hut that was built to house workers when the line was built and now used as a garage and workshop. Take a trip on a steam train on the Settle to Carlisle railway , you must pre-book.
If it's trains you are into then you have to check out the famous, iconic, Settle-Carlisle railway line. A fantastic day out, sit back, relax and take in the views on one of the most beautiful sections of railway in the country
The famous route between Settle and Carlisle travels through some of England's most spectacular countryside. From Settle to Appleby the countryside is of the Yorkshire Dales and start of the Eden Valley. North of Appleby the countryside turns more lush as the railway travels through the vale of Eden, with the Pennines to the East and Lake District to the west. Carlisle makes for a fascinating visit, rich in history and buzzing with shops. There are steam trains that run up the route but the main service is operated by diesel sprinter trains - not the most glamorous but the views from the windows are the same. There are about 6 trains a day each way. For further information on train times and fares, walks, events and guides visit the website on settle-carlisle.co.uk
