During the Indian Ocean trade the caves were used by slave merchants as holding pens for slaves captured by slave hunters -both Arab ‘caravans’ and Africans- from the hinterland. The slaves were shackled and fastened to metal hooks on the cave walls awaiting slave dhows to ship them to Zanzibar, the main slave market on the East African Coast. Slaves carried ivory from the hinterland to the coast. From Zanzibar the slaves were shipped to Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, India and Persia. In 1807 Britain legislated to abolish slavery in all its colonies. In 1822 the Sultan signed a treaty but selling slaves was not abolished until 1876 and slavery remained legal on Zanzibar until 1897.
