a blast from the past, a place where the people of this area used to race cars, has some historic cars and old buildings. great nature walk too.
A Speedway?! What?! Well, there's a lot of NC history here - and - gorgeous - surprising - hiking trails. Just a 15 minutes drive and a world away from the busy city, this historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Check it out if you're in town for a few days. Also - any of the hikes on the Eno River provide a real escape in the midst of summer heat.

The Historic speedway trail last used by NASCAR in 1968 is now a wonderful walking path surrounding by woods along the Eno River and tied into the Hillsborough Riverwalk. It is complete with historic cement bleachers-architecture which makes it feel like an Aztec ruin in the woods.
A 20 minute drive north to Hillsborough will lead you to the former Occoneechee Speedway, the first-ever and only remaining NASCAR dirt track from the inaugural 1949 racing season. The original mile-long dirt track is still there, and is dotted with rusted-out racecars from the era. It is now a historic site and public park frequented by dog walkers, joggers, picnickers, etc. Other local trails meet up to the speedway, as does the Eno River. A trip to the quaint town of Hillsborough, along with a quick hike around Occoneechee Speedway is one of my favorite ways to spend a day.
