Well worth the trip if you’re contemplating the exhilarating drive over Hardknott Pass – but it’s not for the faint-hearted and should only be attempted in good weather!
My real favourite day out - a trip via Ravenglass to the Fort. Totally untouristed. Unspoilt. Carry on after exploring the Fort and drive the passes on a circular tour - full day but for me not to be missed.

Hardknott Roman Fort is an archeological site, the remains of the Roman fort Mediobogdum, located on the western side of the Hardknott Pass in the English county of Cumbria.
This remote and dramatically-sited fort was founded under Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd century. Well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant’s house and bath house. Hardknott Pass itself, is a challenging, twisty single-track road right through the middle of the Lake District, with a 1:3 gradient, continuing through to the Langdale Valley, and on to Ambleside. Worth the drive.
