Located one kilometre out of Cervantes (off the Hansen Bay Lookout Rd), lies Lake Thetis which contains stromatolites in its waters. It is estimated the lake became isolated from the sea about 4800 years ago when sea levels dropped and coastal dunes formed around it. Samples from these living organisms indicate similarities with fossils from up to 3 billion years ago and are one of the few living organisms to produce oxygen.
