Two churches stand at the place where the Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared to the Indian Juan Diego a few years after the conquest: the old basilica, which dates from the 18th century, and the new one from the end of the 20th century. The latter is in the shape of a tent, and houses the most venerated Catholic image in Latin America.
A very special place. This used to be the hill where the pre-hispanic Mexicans venerated God Mother Tonantzin. The Basilica is in fact a group of several chapels, and its well worth a visit, as Mexicans travel from all over the country to see her. On December 12th the plaza fills up with thousands of pilgrims.
