The top of Maunakea has the most incredible views of stars, observatories, and awesome vistas of the entire island. At almost 14,000 feet it's recommended you acclimatize at the Visitor Center at 9,000 feet for 30 minutes before ascending to the top. Tours are available as 4 wheel drive is suggested to drive higher than the Visitor Center.
the best stargazing on a dark night. also great to watch the sunrise or sunset from the top of Mauna Kea above the clouds. this mountain gets a ton of snow during the winter so dress warm!
Drive up to the Visitors Center at Mauna Kea. Most rental cars will not allow you to go up beyond that point (4WD only). They have bus tours that take you up in late afternoon so you can see the sunset over Kona. Take some warm clothes, at that elevation it can get cold! There are rangers who offer stargazing at night.
