Where a river meets the ocean is always a special place and Pawtuxet Village really does! Settled in 1638, it's one of the oldest towns in the country with a rich history connected to the start of the civil war. Beautiful historic homes, independent businesses and gorgeous views give it its present day character. The name Pawtuxet comes from the Narragansett Indian word for “little falls.” The village was part of Roger Williams’ “Grand Purchase” from Miantonomi and Canonicus in 1636, according to the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission but it is best known for the burning of a British schooner, the HMS Gaspee, at Namquid Point, just south of Pawtuxet Cove, on June 9, 1772. This event was “the first overt action of the American Revolution,” according to the historical commission.

A “best kept New England travel secret”, a wonderful walking town and food destination.
