Originally a 16th Century bakery The Noughts and Crosses gets its name not from the game but the practice of allowing fishermen bread on credit when the ocean failed to sustain them through poor weather or tragedy. Loaves of bread would be marked with an ‘X’ if they were unable to pay on the day to be replaced by an ‘O’ when the debt was paid, hence the Noughts and Crosses. Fresh locally produced food in a comfortable setting.
