This small church-filled cluster of twisty laneways lies within the walls of Old Babylon, where the Roman Emperor Trajan first built a fortress along the Nile. Parts of the Roman towers still preside over the main street. The Coptic Museum here contains a wealth of information on Egypt's early Christian period and is home to one of Egypt's finest collections of Coptic art. Next door, the 9th-century Hanging Church contains some beautiful examples of Coptic architecture. Founded in the 4th century, the church was originally built over the Roman gate towers (hence the name) and was substantially rebuilt during the 9th century. For many Christian travelers though, the real highlight of a visit to this district is the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, where local legend says the Virgin Mary, baby Jesus, and family sheltered during King Herod's massacre of male babies. Farther into the quarter, you come to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, which is said to be built near the spot where the baby Moses was found in the reeds. Just outside the quarter, you can also visit the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As; the first mosque built in Egypt. Coptic Cairo is easiest reached by taking the Cairo Metro to Mar Girgis station. Location: Sharia Mar Girgis, south of Downtown

City of Three Religions. Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo) Egypt has always differed from other countries of the Middle East in its patience and tolerance to representatives of other nations, cultures and religio For many years in this ancient part of the city of Fustat-Babylon (Old City) peacefully lived Muslims, Christians and Jews. This is one of the Holy places for Christians around the world - the grotto, in which the Holy Family hid from the persecutions of King Herod. El Muallaqa Church or Hanging Church. The main nave of the temple is located between the two towers of the fortress of Babylon, which serve as the foundation of the entire architectural complex. The church is one of the oldest Christian temples in Egypt. Its history dates back to the III century AD. The church houses more than 100 icons, the oldest of them date back to the VIII century. It also serves as resting place for relics of the saints long dead. Nearby are the Greek Orthodox Church and a monastery named after the Great Martyr George the Victorious, where the miraculous icons and the nilometer are kept. Next door is a unique museum of Coptic art, which was founded in 1910. The museum is dedicated to the history of Christianity in Egypt from its inception to the present day. It contains one of the world's richest collections of works of Coptic art. The exhibition includes works of wood and stone, objects made of metal and textiles, frescas, stucco, icons and manuscripts. Next to the Christian temples is thethe Ben Ezra Synagogue. Originally, the synagogue was a Christian church that Coptic Christians were forced to sell to the Jews in 882.The profits from the sale went to pay the annual taxes of the Coptic community. The church was bought by Abraham Ben Ezra, who came from Jerusalem to Egypt, during the reign of Ahmed ibn Tulun, for 20,000 dinars. The synagogue has long been a place of pilgrimage for Jews from NorthAfrica. In the courtyard of the synagogue there is a well which, according to legend, is located on the very place where the daughter of Pharaoh found the baby Moses. A prominent landmark of the area is the Mosque of Amr ibnal-As, which was built in 642 as the cult center of the first Arab capital of Egypt - the city of Fustat.
