Neighborhoods

The downtown area is small and very easy to navigate. There are many restaurants, art galleries, craft galleries and other unique shops. The city (a 1 mile square area) does not have street addresses nor mail delivery. Everyone has to go to the post office to collect their mail. Nor does the city allow neon signs, there are no traffic lights and still has a law on the books that bans women from wearing high heels (not enforced). Ocean Avenue is the main street with stores and restaurants extending 2 blocks on either side.

City/town information

Monterey is just over the hill from Carmel and was the first California capitol. There are many historical buildings and a "path of history" that you can follow that takes you to many of the buildings (primarily older adobe) of importance. There are two wharfs in Monterey, one is primarily a fishing wharf while the other hosts many good seafood restaurants and shops.

Dress in layers and have comfortable walking shoes

Being on the coast be prepared to dress in layers. The hotter it is inland, the cooler it tends to be on the coast. A day may start out foggy and have the sun burn off - so best be prepared to dress in layers. The city of Carmel-by-the-Sea is one mile square, hilly and without sidewalks in many of the residential areas so if you wish to walk around it's good to have good walking shoes.

Definitely easier with a car

There is public transit available within 3 blocks of the property, however, it is a 5 minute walk to the downtown area. If you wish to visit the surrounding communities (Carmel Valley, Big Sur, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach) it is far more convenient to have your own car.
