Sightseeing

Built by the Portuguese at the end of the 16th century at the southern edge of the town of Mombasa, over a spur of coral rock, and kept under their control for one century, Fort Jesus, Mombasa, bears testimony to the first successful attempt by Western civilization to rule the Indian ocean trade routes, which, until then had remained under Eastern influence. The design of the fort, with its proportions, its imposing walls and five bastions, reflects the military architectural theory of the Renaissance. Fort Jesus, Mombasa, bears physical witness, to the interchange of cultural values and influences between African, Arab, Indian and Chinese who traded across the Indian Ocean.

During the Indian Ocean trade the caves were used by slave merchants as holding pens for slaves captured by slave hunters -both Arab ‘caravans’ and Africans- from the hinterland. The slaves were shackled and fastened to metal hooks on the cave walls awaiting slave dhows to ship them to Zanzibar, the main slave market on the East African Coast. Slaves carried ivory from the hinterland to the coast. From Zanzibar the slaves were shipped to Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, India and Persia. In 1807 Britain legislated to abolish slavery in all its colonies. In 1822 the Sultan signed a treaty but selling slaves was not abolished until 1876 and slavery remained legal on Zanzibar until 1897.

Parks & Nature

This is where one of the clans of the Digo people lived and their ancestors are buried. The coral rag forest is one of the few left in the world and the walk through it is atmospheric. Many of the trees can only be found here and 90% of them have a traditional use whether medicinal, for clothing or implements for fishing.
