Rent stand-up paddle boards or kayaks and launch from Reed’s Bay across the street. We often see sea turtles there, and we love to paddle all the way around Coconut Island.

The rock break wall protects the beach from waves and creates a safe place to play and makes this the best beach park on the Hilo side for little kids. Check the tides before you go. At the highest tides, this turns into a proper swimming pool, and at low tides, there is more sand to play in. At low tide, there is excellent tide pooling if you walk to the left from the main beach area, and you can often find sea turtles hanging out.

Great place to enjoy the water on the hottest days. Cold springs enter the ocean here and make the water extra refreshing.

Hiking

If you only have time for one hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this is the most popular hike. It’s 4 miles and involves some steep terrain. We love getting on the trail early to beat the heat and the crowds. The trailhead parking lot often fills up in the afternoons.
If you only have time for one hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this is the most popular one. It’s a 4 mile loop with some steep terrain as you walk down into and across a volcanic crater. We love getting on the trail in the early morning to beat the heat and avoid the crowds. The parking lot often fills up in the afternoons. Be sure to cross the road for a short detour through the Nahuku Lava Tube. There is a pit toilet at the trailhead but no water. Combine this trail with the Halemaumau trail for a longer loop.

This is a great short hike to the bottom of the caldera. You can park at the visitor center and head out on the trail right from there. This is a 3 mile loop. We like hiking the loop clockwise so the end of the hike is through a shady forest with a gentler uphill slope. Combine this hike with Kilauea Iki and/or the sulfur banks and steam vents for a longer loop.

The Mauna Ulu trail is a great place to explore spectacular volcanic scenery away from the crowds. At the start of the trail, explore a 1969-1974 lava flow to the right of the trail. A one mile hike brings you to the top of a forested cinder cone, Pu‘uhuluhulu. Return the same way or continue on for a longer hike to the top of Mauna Ulu.

This is one of our favorite trails to experience a quieter more remote part of the park. Access the trail from the Kau Desert Trailhead between mile marker 38 and 39 south of the park entrance. It’s a 2 mile hike to the top of Mauna Iki. The scenery at the top is a great place to explore lava formations and look for Pele’s hair. It’s often sunny here even when it’s raining inside the park, so pack sunscreen.

Parking lot gets crowded. We recommend parking at the Kilauea Iki trailhead and enjoying a short forested walk along the crater rim to the lava tube. For an adventurous trip through the lava tube, visit early in the morning or at night when the lights are turned off. Bring a flashlight and check the NPS website for times.
