Best Thai food in Pahoa! Their curries are amazing, as is their green papaya salad, avocado rolls, tom yum soup, etc. I could go on and on... you can also bring in your own wine and they will provide you with wine glasses and a corkscrew for no corkage fee.

City/town information

The southernmost village of the Puna district is Pahoa, which means dagger or knife in the Hawaiian language. Perhaps one reason it was given that name is due to the jagged coastline and the rugged diversity of the land on which it thrives. Pahoa is surrounded by and filled with natural wonders. Pahoa's deep island culture is infused into the main street boutiques, restaurants, craft stores, and galleries.

KEHENA black sand beach is 3/4 mile to the south-west from the farm (make a right at the lawn, walk or drive with the ocean on your left). Kehena is frequented by clothing-optional beach goers + home to wild spinner dolphins. Waves can be extreme + safety is a must. There is no lifeguard on duty. Please use caution at all times. MacKenzie State Park is one of the only tracts of public land along scenic Hwy. 137 in the Puna District that is suitable for hiking. A smaller part of the Malama Ki Forest Reserve, this 13 acre recreation area occupies the harsh lava sea cliffs of the rough Puna coast. Hike through an ironwood forest to tidepools for dipping, picnics and dramatic waves. Stay away from the edge of the cliff, and you may discover some collapsed lava tubes in your travels.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park when lava is flowing or visible makes this a must-see attraction. At its heart are the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa active volcanoes. The Crater Rim Drive passes steam vents and the Jaggar Museum, which features volcanology exhibits and a viewpoint overlooking Halema'uma'u Crater. Go at sunset or at night to catch the glow of lava from the crater. Thick ferns mark the entrance to the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku), which you can actually hike through - a very cool experience. The Chain of Craters Road weaves over lava and you can even see some ancient petroglyphs. Trails crisscross throughout the park.

One of the only swimmable, safe + often secluded beaches on the Puna coastline! Plan for half a day hike, as it's a solid 2.5 mile hike each way down an easy, scenic trail. At the end of the hike, you're rewarded with a beautiful white + black sand marble beach that never has a crowd. Between the sea turtles, giant banyan trees, and blue waters, you’ll feel like you’ve walked into a fairy tale in Shipman Beach. To get there, drive south east on KALOLI DRIVE in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Keaau until it dead ends into BEACH Road. Make a left on Beach Road and park in the gravel at the trailhead. Plan for at least an hour in and out each way, and don't leave any valuables in your car, as recently some travelers have reported rental cars being broken into that were parked in the lot. The trail can get muddy if it's been raining recently. Once you get to the beach, the safest swimming is closer to the trail, and you may even see turtles or nene birds while you are there.

Most gorgeous botanical gardens ever! These gardens are too stunning for words. Waterfalls, orchids, palms and everything else you’d want in a botanical garden in paradise. Well worth the drive and the price! Must see on the Big Island: We went up Mauna Kea and saw most the other sights on the Island of Hawaii. But this was, without doubt, the highlight of our trip. Do not miss it! Definitely worth the drive just outside of Hilo! A piece of paradise! These gardens are truly spectacular and have been attracting photographers + nature lovers from around the world for years. The grounds are designed to enhance all the natural beauty. Go early so you can wander through the different sections. It is a magical place where paths + bridges guide you over mountain-fed streams and waterfalls guide you into awe-inspiring views of Onomea Bay along the beautiful Hamakua Coast. Open daily from 9am-5pm (closed on federal holidays), last entry is at 4pm and rates are $25/per adult, $12/per child, and keikis (little ones) under 6pm are free.

Amazing place to watch the sunset from above the clouds at the summit of the tallest mountain on Earth, when measured from the base which is actually underwater. You'll need AWD or 4x4 to drive up from the Visitor Center to the summit. Give yourself time to acclimate to the elevation change at the Visitor Center before driving the last final bit. Incredible + epic adventure. Bring a jacket + hat, as it's so cold that it often snows at the peak.
