About 15-20 minutes away from your stay in my cottage, you will find probably one of the most interesting, eclectic, and unique small towns life has to offer! It's sort of the "hippie-verse" of the Big Island world. You can find many restaurants and even a new shopping center that is more modern called Puna Kai where there are clothing stores, groceries, restaurants, ice cream, and random gems. I highly recommend visiting on the second saturday of the month if you can for the Music & Art Walk! Or if you are feeling internally adventurous and looking for an artistically fun experience, try hanging out at the Kava Bar on Thursday nights to watch (or participate!) in Open Mic Night! :) Enjoy this strange and beautiful town!

Its a jungle out there! Pahoa is located in a tropical rain forest on the Southeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii. The town of Pahoa is a small eclectic town with a hippy casual friendly vibe. This small town reminds me of the old west with one street going through the middle of town. There are many stores lining the street, wonderful small restaurants, gift shops, crystal store, ice cream shop, bank, 7-11, community pool. It has character! You never know what you will see. The locals come from all walks of life and they refer to themselves as Punatics. (Pahoa is in the Puna district). They even have T-shirts (Proud to be a Punatic). In the newer section of the town of Pahoa you will find a grocery store (Malama Market), and a new shopping mall (Puna Kai Shopping Center), restaurants, shops, gas, and the best fried fish restaurant (Pahoa Fresh Fish), great ice cream shop and so much more. (Budget travel included Pahoa in the top 15 coolest small towns across the country 2014, and Outside Magazine ranked Pahoa #2 for travel award for best Adventure Hub 2014.). Pahoa is 6 miles from the historic Enchanted Red Road, one of the best scenic drives on the Big Island that stretches for 15 miles along the gorgeous coast. As you follow this road through the lush tropical setting reminiscent of Old Hawaii, you will encounter dangling jungle vines and a canopy of trees making it feel like a living tunnel with incredible views of the turquoise water and black lava cliffs. There are places to pull off to the side of the road and take pictures. This same road leads to a newly formed black sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park, and one of the prettiest black sand beaches by mile marker 19 is Kehena Beach (swim, dolphin and whale watch, Sunday morning drumming circle, clothing optional). There are many farmers markets in the Pahoa area including, Uncle Roberts, Kalapana-Kaimu’s Farmers Market (Wednesday nights, Saturday mornings). Wednesday nights at Uncle Roberts is a festive night which includes a live band, dancing, food, vendors…It’s a great time! Another is the Maku’u market on Sunday’s. Other local attractions in the area include: Panawa Zoo (free admission), Macadamia Nut Factory (tours, and samples), chocolate factories, Lava tree state park.
