I never saw anything like it. The volanco was smoldering. Then I learned about lava tubes and was able to walk through one. Amazing to learn about and to see. you can see the crater on fire every night. There is a very long hike going down the caldera of the smaller volcano and crossing the floor of the crater. Do it!

Beautiful waterfall. There is parking at the end of the road and you do pay to park and walk into the falls area. Some people were able to park on the side of the road but it will depend on available spots. There is a .4mile loop around 2 waterfalls. There are many steps and some incline. There is a short version that can be taken as well just to see the main and largest waterfall. We enjoyed the entire walk around the jungle area. So much green and huge trees and flowers were blooming. At the intersection we went to the right to see the smaller waterfall first and then the larger waterfall was second. This area is popular with tour groups.

This waterfall is more of a scenic stop. There is a parking lot where you go up a ramp to view the waterfall. Walking distance is about the length of a parking lot. If you are short in time, this is a good place to visit in Hilo. Also there is no parking fee. There are informational plaques that talk about the history of the waterfall. Definitely worth a few minutes to stop by and see if you are near Hilo.

Be sure to go for sunset. Amazing views above the clouds. You do need a 4-wheel drive or you can book a tour. That wasn't a problem as we planned to park at the Visitor's Center and enjoy the incredible night sky. I don't recommend going without having a 4-wheel drive as it could be dangerous (or just stop at Visitor Center. There is a good size hill you can climb from there). Part of our group remained there as their children were not allowed up top due to altitude. We saw incredible shooting stars. Also, there wasn't a hiking trail to the top of Mauna Kea.

Otherwise known as Big Island’s Four Mile Scenic Drive, this road travels along rainforest roads, traverses the coast, and crosses waterfalls. It won’t take long to drive the route, but there are so many things to stop and marvel at on the way! One of the highlights is Onomea Bay, which is full of beauty.

Holei Sea Arch is a large rock formation on the southern coast of the island. It’s a natural rock arch caused by erosion and is one of the best spots on the coastline for landscape photography. At the time of writing, you can no longer get this close to it, but it still makes for some neat shots!

Beach

One of the nicest sand beaches on the Kohala coast. It’s a big beach with a lot of space. It never felt crowded. They have a large parking area. It’s self-pay, and the kiosk is at the entrance to the beach. $10 for parking and $5 per person. Please pay, it covers the cost of maintaining the beach and paying lifeguards. Large cove, nice sand has showers and restrooms went to snorkel by the rock and saw a sea turtle never know what you will find

Soft sands, crystal clear water + sea turtles - what’s not to love? Our family spent 2 days of our trip at this stunning beach. An absolute favorite spot on the Big Island for sure. A great beach for kiddos to swim and play as the water is fairly calm and the ocean floor is soft white sand. We were lucky enough to spot some sea turtles both times we were there and it truly is such a magical sight. Just please please be respectful and keep a good amount of distance between you and them. I definitely recommend this beach to any and everyone.

Take the ride in with the locals, it costs about $20 per person but it beats the walk. It’s 3 miles one way of rough hot terrain.. The drive itself is an experience! Def feels like you’re off-roading! Some people walked. Unless you’re an experienced hiker, I wouldn’t do it. The beach was gorgeous, pictures don’t do it justice. The green sand sparkles in the sun. You can go swimming but the break of the waves on the shoreline is rough. Also be careful with children, or if you’re not a strong swimmer, the pull of the waves can drag you in quickly.

La‘aloa Beach—or more commonly known as Magic Sands—gets its nickname from the “magic” that happens to the sand when the tide rolls in. One moment, the beach is covered in soft white sand, but as soon as the powerful tide takes over its shores, the sand disappears to reveal rocks of all shapes and sizes along the beach. La‘aloa Beach is considered one of the most popular beaches in Kailua-Kona, so plan to arrive early. It is 2.5 miles from the condo. Because the swell can get big, this is not a beginner snorkeling spot. We recommend snorkeling here when the waves are calm (this usually occurs in the morning) for optimal visibility and safety.

While typically known as a beginner surf break, Kahalu‘u Beach Park is also a popular snorkeling spot for visitors and locals alike. It’s located just a few miles from downtown Kona, in Keauhou, and is perfect for families with kids of all ages. Most people don’t know about Mahai’ula Beach, a beautiful beach that’s far less crowded than other beaches on the island. That’s because it takes about 20-30 minutes to hike to Malakawena, but keep in mind that you walk through lava fields. The water is clear and clean, and has an exotic vibe that will leave you feeling like you’re on another planet.

It’s one of our favorite things to do in the Big Island with kids.

Neighborhoods

This road is about one block and 5 minute walk from the condo. This seaside road winds its way along the coast from the Marriott at the north end, southward to the Sheraton (and continues all the down to Napoopoo Rd in Kealakekua)... most of the shops and eateries are located towards the northern end, and are easily visited on foot (or via the inexpensive Honu Trolley — their schedule is available on the web). Gift stores, coffee shops, historic sites, art galleries, tour operators, cafes/restaurants, bars, etc are all here :)) We especially like to stroll at sunset and during the evenings, when you can listen to live music while walking beneath the big old trees... In the central area, look for parking (free or paid) to the east a block behind the main thoroughfare (note: finding a parking spot can be challenging during the busy mid day period). Enjoy!

It’s said to be the center of coffee, art, and farming on the island and is home to the beautiful Magic Sands Beach Park. This funky artist-friendly town is beloved for its small-town charm. The two-lane main road is dotted with art galleries and coffee shops. Its colorful plantation-style buildings are picture-perfect and are found along the road that takes you to the Kona coastline
