1. If your goal is to see animals the ideal time is early in the morning. The gate can get a little crowded around 7:30 on, so the earlier you get into the park the better.
2. Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center
- Co-located with the ranger station at the West Yellowstone entrance, this is a great place to see wolves and grizzlies. They also have an IMAX theatre there. The ranger station is also a great to swing into and grab maps and get information on the park. They'll help set up an itinerary. Also, great bathrooms after making the drive from Big Sky.
3. When entering the park be patient. If it's peak season be prepared for traffic (bison) jams when a car sees any kind of animal.
4. If you're making your way down towards Old Faithful, you'll pass some geysers and the grand Prismatic Spring. Do not stop at the first entrance into the first geyser. This is the busiest stop due to it being the first real attraction. Drive by the first entrance and take the second entrance, less traffic and people.
5. When entering the old faithful area follow the signs for the Old Faithful Lodge/Handicap parking. The main parking lot will be off to your left. Before the lodge, follow "Old Faithful Lodge Rd" this will take you behind the main lodge and you'll start to see little cabins. There are usually front row parking spots on the backside of the lodge. There are also bathrooms scattered throughout the cabins. Start walking up towards old faithful and there will be multiple paths around the area. My recommendation is to sit on the deck of the lodge where there are rocking chairs and watch from there. You won't deal with pushy crowds and you'll have the same view. After old faithful is done, stay in the rocking chairs and grab an ice cream, which is immediately behind the rocking chairs. While you eat your ice cream the parking lot mass exit will ease up and you won't have to wait in traffic.
6. Yellowstone Falls: Artist Point has the best views of the Lower Yellowstone Falls. Park your car and walk the path to the scenic overlook.
7. If you're looking for herds of animals, the majority of the buffalo and elk tend to be up in the Lamar Valley area. Don't just focus on the herds immediately insight. If you have binoculars look towards the bottom of the tree line when looking across the valley and you'll usually see elk laying in the shade.
