The city’s best sundowner spot, by far, is a 2 minute walk from the house. Stunning view, lovely setting, great cocktails. For snacks the camarao ouzo (prawns in tomato & ouzo sauce) are incredible and don’t miss the chamussas de queijo e mel (honey & feta samosas). Amazing iced coffees & good for lunch too.

It is walkable from home and a nice place for a cup of coffee in a park and with a nice view to the bay. The service is painfully slow so don’t go if you’re in a rush.

Walkable from the house, next to Jardim dos Namorados (in Google maps as Valentine Garden). To walk there, when you come out of our street and are standing opposite the park, take a left and cross the other mini park to turn left on the main road. It has a great view of the bay and a decent array of Portuguese pastries. The pastel de natas (Portuguese sweet egg tart - better than the English description makes it sound!) are some of the best in the city. You can walk it off after with a stroll down Avenida Friedrich Engels which has a nice view over the bay.

My favourite lunch spot - right by the ocean and a fabulous view back to the city. Great for seafood. The tagliata de atum (tuna), grilled prawns and crab salad are favourites of mine, washed down with a glass of Portuguese green wine. Yum. They also have great fresh pasta and fabulous homemade ice cream.

A dinner-time favourite for us. Madeiran food. The espedata de bife is awesome. The ponche (punch) is yummy and will put hairs on your chest. Make sure to book in advance if going on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. You can walk from home.

At 281 Julius Nyere. Despite the uninspired name the food is decent and probably the best place in town to go for picanha (Brazilian classic dish).

The cleanest city beach is opposite the Taverna Doce and Sugar & Spice on Avenida Marginal. It can be quite busy in the summer. We love it in the winter when everyone else thinks it’s too cold! Sip a coconut and enjoy the view.

Polana hotel is a historic landmark with a nice view over the bay. You can go for a drink or lunch but it’s a bit overpriced for a mediocre culinary experience. Alternatively, if you do a treatment (facial, massage, etc) you can use their heated pool which is in a moroccan-style courtyard and get a sense for the place that way.
