Sightseeing
Beautiful place to hike. But you HAVE to get there early, and walk as far away from the lodge as possible. Take the bluff trail, it is more spectacular than the river trail.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal is, in my opinion, the most marvelous part of the area. It is very historic. It is what made the connection between Lake Michigan and The Mississippi River to make Chicago the shopping center of the US in the 1800s. It is very beautiful in some parts, and there are places where you can still see the original locks used back then. And it’s much much quieter than Starved Rock.

They have a visitors center where you can go and watch barges go through the locks. A relative of ours actually died helping build it back in the 30s!
