Public access via Unakuruwa or resort. Recommended to go from the Unakuruwa side because the security at the hotel could be intimidating specially when celebrities are on premises.

We wouldn’t usually suggest going all the way to Unawatuna to get your hand on a Gelato. But some things are just worth it!

About 4 km from Hiriketiya. Well worth a tuk tuk ride to the station. Connections to all beach towns such as Weligama, Mirissa, Midigama, Ahangama, Habaraduwa, Talpe, Unawatuna, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Bentota all the way to Colombo.
Tickets are very cheap and trains are super comfortable with good views.

Many busses with connections to anywhere in the island. Only downside is that there's no proper schedule and most are not very comfortable.
Ang dapat iempake
Sunscreen, flip flops, snickers, cigerettes
If you're a smoker it's best to bring your supply. Cigarettes' are super expensive in Sri Lanka comparing to other things and only a few brands are available as it's monopolized by BAT.
It's very difficult to find good sunscreen. The locally made brands does not do it and the rare imported brands cost a fortune!
Flip flops are essential for the beach so is a pair of snickers. Your feet will get tired walking on gravel roads in flip flops and you'll crave a pair of good snickers that you won't find anywhere other than in Colombo.

Reservations for trains and restaurants
It's recommended to book in advance the Kandy to Ella train if you need a seat or want to travel first class or the observation deck (only in some trains).
You may also book popular restaurants in advance but not essential other than special nights such as Christmas and New Years eve.
Advance bookings recommended to whale watching, safari's etc.

Shopping Mall's in Colombo and Online Shopping
If you're staying in Sri Lanka for a while you need to visit the mall's in Colombo such as One Galle Face Mall done by Shangri La and Colombo City Center. They have all the high-street brands and essentials at reasonable prices.
Also on google you may find departments stores such as Odel as well as speciality stores (ex: dsifootcandy for snickers or decathlon & Onda for surf gear). These stores are also available online and deliver to your doorstep

Restaurants and Cafes
We find that most restaurants in Hiriketiya area other than the once recommended in this guide are overpriced and offer very small portions for Sri Lankan standards and prices. Even five star hotels with celebrity chefs in cities such as Colombo, Kandy and Galle are accessible at more reasonable prices while serving substantial quality portions. We advise you to choose wisely.
