Sister restaurant to Pujol in Mexico City — both owned by Enrique Olivera — Criollo combines modern and pre-Hispanic cuisines. One of the best known in Oaxaca. It also has an apartment on premises which we stayed at via AirBNB. Very fun to essentially wake up and go to sleep in a restaurant. Pool included to boot.

The main public square is a great place to start to get your bearings. This city is a grid so it’s incredibly easy to get around. There is also a beautiful cathedral in the middle of Zocalo.

The main cathedral is a five minute walk up the hill from Zocalo. Walk up Andador Turistico from the park which is a pedestrian only street which has many restaurants, craft markets and street art.

Incredible shows and architecture — designed by Arquitectos Artesanos — the museum has a great gift shop which is actually reasonably priced compared with some other stores.

In our opinion, the best place in town to purchase ceramics and gifts. It is also housed in an amazing building. Not to be missed.

A must! One of the oldest and most important arachelogical sites in Mexico. Lalo (our favorite taxi driver) is also a history professor and his private tour of Monte Alban is fascinating.

Spectacular palace/theater. We’ve only admired from afar but would be great to check out the latest performances.

Lalo is the best. We trust him to get us where we need to be and to get us home. He is steeped in the knowledge of Mexican history (including pre-Hispanic times) and is an absolute delight to be with.
