• Distance from The Sands: 80km Cape Point, in the southern section of Table Mountain National Park, is the famous “Cape of Storms”, first rounded by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Dias was followed a decade later by Vasco da Gama, who successfully opened a new trading route for Europe with India and the Far East – leading to the re-naming of the Cape Peninsula as the “Cape of Good Hope”. Stone cliffs tower 238m above the sea, while on the shoreline, wicked, jagged rocks mingle with beautiful bays and beaches. By day, the “Point” was a navigational landmark - but by night, and in fog, it was a menace beset by violent storms and the treacherous rocks. And so, the Lighthouse was built in 1859 on Da Gama Peak, the summit of Cape Point. But it was too high to be effective, and in 1914, a newer lighthouse was built lower down, at 87m - the most powerful on the South African coast. The old lighthouse still stands. Cape Point’s rolling green hills and valleys are blanketed in “fynbos”, the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. Take an exciting trip up to the summit in the Flying Dutchman Funicular railway, which is named after the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship. The ride saves you the hectic uphill walk (which you can also choose to do!) to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views. https://capepoint.co.za/
