Upscale but not pretentious diner serving an array of classic diner dishes (Reubens all day!) and all-day breakfast, plus home-made pop tarts (yes you read that right) and slices of cake the size of your face.

Located just a few blocks from the house, this place contrasts with Washington's usual steel and minimalist aesthetic and is more warm and rustic. They also are serving some of the best Italian food in the city, and reserve seats for walk ins every night.

Who needs Georgetown Cupcake when you have Grassroots Gourmet? I love their iced coffee, and cupcakes, but really it's the pastries that kill me. They also have sweets and coffee from around Washington, highlighting how truly locally minded they are. But most importantly, the treats are delish. Also dangerously close to the house.

Just because you're at the Mall, doesn't mean you should forgo good foods. Even if you're not into fusion foods, this mix of Peruvian meets Asian is really special. Also great drinks.

Drinks & Nightlife

This place -- named after Hemingway's boat -- serves some of the best food in the city (if you don't trust me, the Washingtonian agrees (https://www.washingtonian.com/food/restaurantreviews/100-very-best-restaurants-2015-no-77-bar-pilar/) Also great cocktails. And a hip scene, without being too much or intimidating at all. Highly recommend reservations for weekend nights.

The best music venue in the country, imho. Check out the Satellite Room or American Ice Company for some drinks before the show.

If you like cocktails, book a seat at this place ASAP. You'll pay $15, but talk to the bartender, get some input, and I bet you'll have the best drink you've ever had. Great for a special occasion, and worth it for even one drink. Because it'll be near perfect.

Up and coming acts, but most importantly: dance parties. Check out what's going on before you go, because usually it's tailored to indie kids, older crowds, or gay crowds.

Sightseeing

The flag that inspired the National Anthem is here! And it is stunning. Also years of American History told via the artifacts from various eras. Busy all summer, but not as bad early in the morning on weekdays.

This is my fave and most recommended museum. It's open late (730, unlike most places' that close at 5), there are good eats all around it (Graffiato for Italian, Zatinya for Mediterranean, Daikaya for Ramen, Shake Shack for burgers) and 1. Presidential Portrait Gallery. Seriously it's DC. Get your president on. 2. Portrait competition. See what the brightest artists in the US are interpreting portraiture. Hint: it's not like the olden day stills. 3. Expositions. Always something cool here. 4. Arboretum. Terrible cafe, but amazing place to relax. 5. Top floor modern art installations. So cool. I especially love the 30 years of the same sisters. And the US in neon.

All the climates! Tons of water features! I seriously fell in love with this place. 5 years in DC and I hadn't been until recently, and it's definitely worth a wander. No cafe, but an easy stop on your way back from the Capitol building. If you like plants, this is a must.

Small but well curated selection of wines. Also has a cafe with sandwiches and coffees. This is not "Fit for Foodies" but is good for basics, desserts, or a quick cheap sandwich.
