Initially built in 674, the Abbey was one of the earliest places of Christian worship that survives today, later built over subsequent centuries it has seen raiders from Vikings, and Scottish insurgency including William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It is a place for christian worship and quiet meditation and it's general splendour attracts and Saxon crypt has also attracted tourism to the town of Hexham important to its local economy. There is and excellent cafe and Abbey gift shop and is adjacent to the lovely civic park and gardens and market square.

There is a small museum and an opportunity to walk down one of the drift mine tracks (wellingtons supplied!)
Approximately one hours drive across extensive open heather moorland, The Bowes Museum is an unexpected surprise for most visitors, the scale and stature of this purpose built museum, founded in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes in his ancestral town of Barnard Castle.
It is a typical piece of french style architecture but stands out formidably against the local town, and houses the extensive collection of art and objet d'art of its founders, passionately acquired over their lifetime. There is an excellent cafe and is set alongside a vibrant market town with antiques shopping and tea rooms.

A free car park for Corbridge town. It is situated Hexham side of the bridge before the town, which is a short walk across the bridge. It is handy to know because parking is usually difficult both at peak and off-peak times during holidays and weekends. There is also a popular dog walk along the river which can be accessed from the car park.

This is a lovely small gallery with quality works by local artists based in the north. It is worth popping in if you are already planning a wider visit to the Northumberland coastline. Alnmouth has a pretty sandy beach and an interesting historic town centre.

It is a destination in itself (fortunately, then, with a cafe serving hot food and beverages). Alnwick town is an interesting historic town with lots of other interest.

Brampton is a small historic town just outside Carlisle in Cumbria and is aproximately 50 minutes drive from the cottage

This is in Allenheads, the closest cafe (2 miles) to the cottage. It has a small gift shop, lots of outdoor seating, and a cosy log burner for colder months. The cafe serves hot food all day: breakfast, lunch, and tea, as well as lighter bites and hot beverages.

There is a farmer's market twice a month on a Saturday (they post their dates online). Producers come from within a 50-mile range of the town, so you know that the meat and vegetables are locally produced. There is usually a fish stall as well.

Dog owners
Friends have recommended this doggy boarding and daycare which is well within walking distance to the cottage. Should you love to travel with your dog but would enjoy to visit some places or activities where dogs are not permitted then one or two days daycare may be a good solution and your dog will still be back at the cottage with you overnight if you want. They have contact details on their website and although I have no personal experience (I have no dog) friends do travel here over 40 miles to use them for boarding their beloved dog whether visiting me or not!
