The newest exhibit "From Slave to Soldier, Free a Man" the African American Experience at Fort Fisher, highlights African Americans' role in Fort Fisher's story from the fortress' construction to its fall, then forward to those stationed there during WWII . A scenic trail, shaded by gnarled live oaks, leads past the earthworks, around to the rear of the fort remains.
