One hotspot in particular for birding enthusiasts is Amherst Island. It’s a wonderful place to view and learn about a variety of owls. The most common species found here during the winter are the Northern Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared Owls, with smaller numbers of Barred Owls, Great Horned Owls, and a few Boreal Owls and Great Grey Owls. Snowy Owls, as well as the Northern Hawk Owls, are usually found in trees and on fence posts or hydro poles near open fields throughout the Island.
While bird watching, please respect the wildlife and vegetation on your visit. Remember not to get too close and move and speak quietly. Avoid the use of a flash if you are taking photographs.
In the winter, Amherst Island is one of the best known spots in Ontario for winter birding because the island regularly supports large populations of hawks, harriers, owls, shrikes and waterfowl. In spring and autumn Amherst Island can be a great place to see migrating waterfowl, shorebirds and passerines. During the summer months the island is home to a few notable breeding species like Wilson’s Phalarope.
Virtually all of the land on Amherst Island is privately owned, so most bird watching is done from the roadside. There are a few properties however, to which land owners kindly allow public access.
Please remember to respect the wildlife and vegetation, keep quiet and avoid using flash photography.

The Museum remains closed due to the pandemic.
Opened in 2004, Amherst Island’s Neilson Store Museum highlights artifacts from Island families and Island history since its first settlement in 1789, when it was originally named Isle Tonti. Items in the collection include the MV Amherst Islander’s ship’s wheel, bell, and logs. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, the Museum itself is also an exhibit having once been owned by James S. Neilson, an island grain merchant who opened his first general store in 1873, with the store remaining in the Neilson family for more than one hundred years.

Clear water and sandy shores welcome visitors to this wonderful conservation area.
Sand Beach Wetlands Conservation Area is 54 acres, of wetlands with great ecological significance (acquired and stewarded by Loyalist Township to protect its valued natural heritage) located at the southwest end of Amherst Island. The area’s woodland and dune habitats are a provincially significant wetland as they are unique breeding grounds for species at risk. It’s also part of the larger Amherst Island habitat recognized as a Globally Significant Important Bird Area.
Access to the beach is sign-posted in two areas – from the parking area and across from the viewing platform. Sand Beach is an unsupervised public beach so please do not swim alone. Also, it is important to refrain from crossing the dunes or vegetation anywhere other than the two access paths – this is to preserve the dunes and aid their regeneration.
A great place for:

Ferry Line Etiquette
It is important to be respectful and orderly while waiting for the ferry. At periods of peak usage, or diminished capacity (such as when the ferry is attending an emergency, or while being replaced by a smaller ferry), there can be a great deal of pressure on the ferry mustering areas on both docks. In these instances, it is vital to observe good ferry line etiquette and to listen to ferry staff on the docks when they are present.
Additionally:
Fill all lanes as you arrive
Pull all the way to the front of the line to ensure lines can be filled
Be mindful of your position in the line and wait your turn
