Neighborhoods
Local favorites include the library and the St. Vincent De Paul thrift store. A nice place to walk and see the town. West Chicago is the city "where history and progress meet," and you can see signs of its heritage as a railroad town with the old train depot and museum downtown. The Kruse House Museum and garden on Main Street shares its heritage as the home of a former railroad collector.
The historic district on the north side of town is a nice place to walk. The family friendly south side is where the Train Conductor's Cottage is located and a good walk as well. If you walk north on Barber Street and west on Spencer, you will come to the local high school. We like to either turn south on Joliet and loop back to Barber, or take a longer walk around the high school and back home by going north on Joliet, west on Geneva, south on Wood Street, east on Ann Street, back north on Joliet to Conde, east on Conde, and back to Barber Street. It makes a nice 15-minute walk and is a perfect dog-walk for energetic dogs. The shorter route to the high school and around the block is best with smaller, older dogs.
West Chicago is proud of its German and Mexican heritage and has events like Bloomingfest in May, Cinqo de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day parade in September, Frosty Fest in December, and Railroad Days the weekend of July 14.
West Chicago is a one-destination school system, so the local high school provides a loyal fan base. Enjoy your stay!
