The Basingstoke Canal is a British canal, completed in 1794, built to connect Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge via the Wey Navigation. From Basingstoke, the canal passes through or near Greywell, North Warnborough, Odiham, Dogmersfield, Fleet, Farnborough Airfield, Aldershot, Mytchett, Brookwood, Knaphill and Woking. Its eastern end is at Byfleet, where it connects to the Wey Navigation. This, in turn, leads to the River Thames at Weybridge. Its intended purpose was to allow boats to travel from the docks in East London to Basingstoke. It was never a commercial success and, from 1950, lack of maintenance allowed the canal to become increasingly derelict. After many years of neglect, restoration commenced in 1977 and on 10 May 1991 the canal was reopened as a fully navigable waterway from the River Wey to almost as far as the Greywell Tunnel. However its usage is currently still limited by low water supply and conservation issues

he complex is situated on the outskirts of the historical market town of Guildford in an area known as Stoke Park. The 26 acre site was chosen because of its proximity to the town and it is also within easy reach of the main A3 trunk road that links London with the South coast at Portsmouth.
It was the first of its kind in the UK and still today it is unrivalled in the facilities it houses all under one roof. Guildford Spectrum prides itself in providing first class facilities for the residents of Guildford as their local leisure centre, to the 1000’s of day visitors as a regional tourist attraction with a catchment of 1½ hours drive time and also the attendees and spectators to the numerous sporting and non-sporting events that take place each year.
The complex is also home to the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey team that are based from Spectrum who compete in the English Premier Ice Hockey League and regularly during the season play to crowds of over 2000.

Waverley Abbey in Surrey was the very first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order. A small group of monks from France settled in this quiet spot by the River Wey in 1128, and Waverley soon became the springboard for Cistercian settlement in southern England. The impressive remains include the fine 13th century vaulted refectory or dining hall for the lay brothers, the Cistercians' labour force.
