Beaches

A huge and glorious expanse of sand, Pettycur beach starts off at Pettycur harbour and stretches all the way to Burntisland. At low tide it is possible to walk out to the Black Rock but do check tide times. With wonderful views towards Edinburgh, this clean and unbusy beach is ideal for giving dogs a run and flying a kite and is also popular with kite surfers. Kinghorn Harbour is a lovely little harbour with a sandy beach and plenty of rock pools. Quiet and good for dogs and children too. There is a small cafe and a lifeboat base. You can see Edinburgh on a clear day and if you’re very lucky you may spot occasional dolphins. A small shop sells all you need for a day at the beach, including buckets and spades as well as snacks

Burntisland beach is a wide sandy strip with plenty of rock pools. Busier than Kinghorn, it is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer months, and backed by the Links - a huge area of grass with children’s play park

Edinburgh really is the jewel in Scotland’s Crown, and with regular trains departing from Kinghorn station, it is the ideal day trip. Personally, unless you’re into military history, I think the castle is best admired from afar - Princes Street gardens with a picnic is an ideal vantage point. Try to be there at 1pm to hear the one o’clock gun salute (not Sunday’s). Chambers Street museum is full of fascinating objects, from Scotland and around the world. The natural history section is fabulous for children. Enjoy wandering around the old town and the new (Georgian!) town.
