George III, the father of the legendary Queen Tamara, began building a monastery-fortress Vardzia in Georgia in a steep tuff rock to protect the fertile Georgian lands from the raids of the Turks and Persians. Сomplex consisting of more than 600 rooms with churches, chapels, living cells, storerooms, treasury, refectories and baths. The complex is deepened into the rock for 50 meters and has 8 floors.Vardzia is an active monastery, though with a small number of monks. In 2005, construction work was carried out to restore the monastery to make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
