Salona (Ancient Greek: Σάλωνα) was an ancient city and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The name Salona preserves the language of the early inhabitants of this area whom the Romans called Dalmatae, and considered to be part of a larger group called Illyrians.[1] Salona (or Salon) is situated in today's town of Solin, right next to Split, in modern-day Croatia. In the very centre of Salona, on a river islet (Gospin otok – Our Lady’s Islet) in the delta of Salona’s river Salon, now known as the Jadro, next to the parish church of St. Mary, Our Lady of the Islet (Sv. Marija, Gospa od Otoka), there is an exceptionally valuable archaeological site, now totally covered with earth. The present parish church was built in 1880. To its south there is a grassy area where thousands of believers attended the mass on the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II, in 1998. http://solin-info.com/en/attractions/monuments/gospin-otok/
