Walking the National Mall, between museums and the Capitol Building/Supreme Court/Library of Congress, or walking the monument/memorials (Washington Monument, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, WWI, the Reflecting Pool, Lincoln, MLK Jr., FDR, Jefferson, etc.) makes for wonderful outings. We recommend taking the metro closer (to Capitol South/Federal Center SW or Smithsonian) and walking from there.

Using Metro (Subway)/City Buses

Often the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to get around is by metro (subway) or bus. We provide SmarTrip cards for our visitors, which can be used on the metro (subway) trains, city buses, and Circulator buses. Usually single fares are more economical than day/week passes.

Metro (subway) advice

Metro etiquette is very important to regular metro commuters! When on escalators, we stand on the right and walk on the left. When the train arrives, we wait to the left or right of the door until people are off the train before getting on. (We wait for those to get off buses before getting on as well.) We also keep our metro cars and buses clean by refraining from eating (this also carries a hefty fine).

Getting Around

Metro's website is www.wmata.com, but we find Google Maps a useful tool as well, as it provides advice on getting around on foot and by using a variety of public transit options.

In addition to multiple public transportation options, our apartment is located an easy walk to H Street; Kingman Island and Heritage Park; the Anacostia River bike trail (which connects with other trails throughout the city and beyond); the Rosedale Recreation Center, public library, and outdoor pool; and the new "The Fields at RFK". It's a 30-minute walk (or 2 metro stops) to Eastern Market and Barracks Row, which (in addition to H St.) offers great restaurants, bars, and shops.
