Located on the 400 block of Ann Street in Beaufort’s historic district, the town’s oldest cemetery holds fascinating stories about Beaufort’s 300-year history! Established in the early 1700’s, its weathered tombstones chronicle the heritage of North Carolina’s third oldest town and the surrounding coast. Used for Anglican church services in nearby St. John’s Parish, the cemetery was later deeded to the town of Beaufort in 1731 by Nathaniel Taylor following the first survey of the town. Today, the Old Burying Ground is owned and maintained by the Town of Beaufort.
Many graves are marked with shell, brick, or wooden slabs because stone markers would have to have been brought from afar by wooden sailing vessels. Others have vaulted markers, which were covered in brick to protect them from high water and wild animals and are characteristic of many historic seaport towns. Uncovered by an archaeological survey in 1992, the seemingly empty northwest corner of the cemetery is in fact its oldest section, with many unmarked graves dating from the early 18th century. A record from September 1711 notes the area had “been depopulated by the late Indian War and Massacre.” It is probable some of the unmarked graves were victims of the Indian wars whose skulls were cleft with tomahawks of hostile Coree and Neusiok Indians. Other inhabitants include a child who died at sea and was buried in a keg of rum, as well as the great privateer Captain Otway Burns and the crew of the Crissie Wright who died when their schooner went aground at Shackleford Banks during a January storm in 1886.

This is an outdoor rain or shine market which gathers under the old live oaks on the courthouse square in the center of Beaufort on Saturday mornings from 8:30 until 1:00. Farmers and fishermen gather under tents filled with fresh, locally grown vegetables, farm-raised meats, eggs, honey and other homegrown products. Bakers share golden, delicious baked goods: croissants, morning buns, tomato pies, cupcakes, quiches, and cookies to name a few. Fishermen offer fresh, locally caught shrimp, fish, crabs, and other seafood. And, artists and craftspeople fill their tents with handmade work from their studios, available for all who appreciate quality, unique creations. Local musicians provide entertainment to those who stop to linger with breakfast or lunch from our weekly food truck, and local non-profit organizations share their work with the public. We are located at 133B Turner Street about half a block from the boardwalk and Taylors Creek. Fishtowne Brew House is the first establishment you see on the right after crossing Ann Street and entering Downtown. Sitting directly across from the Beaufort Visitors Center and the Beaufort Historic Grounds, The interior space is narrow and has an open framed ceiling over 11 feet high. It has an old meets new feel with painted concrete block wall and concrete floor, while the room is filled with stainless steel brewing equipment. Craft beer loving patrons can sit at tables right next to the brewing area or at our concrete bar top and enjoy our fresh brews right from the tap. We have TV’s above the bar and spin vinyl from our personal collections on select days of the week. Our beers consist of IPA, pale ale, blonde, milk stout and Belgian ales such as Belgian Wit, Belgian Pale, Belgian Triple and Belgian Saisons.
