Fabulous unique Moorish history in the historic city of Granada. Book tickets online at the official site before arriving . Granada’s star attraction and one of the most famous historical monuments in the world, is the 10th century Alhambra complex. Though a small fort was built on this site in the 9th century, the structure we see today dates mainly from the 13th; the fort itself is surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with fountains and nightingales and linked by shaded paths to the Generalife, or summer palace. As you wander through the cool rooms, the walls of which are masterpieces of Moorish interior design, you are instantly transported back to the majesty of Islamic Spain. The forest that surrounds this fascinating building and its grounds is hardly less magical.

El Torcal is famous for its amazing limestone rock formations. It is easily accessible near the town of Antequera. Three routes through the park for walkers have been marked out with different coloured arrows on wooden sticks. The green route is the shortest and easiest, 1,5 km. and takes about 30 minutes. The yellow route covers most of the green area, is 2,5 km. long and takes you to "Las Ventanillas" (The Windows), at 1.200 m. for panoramic views of the valley of Málaga. Finally the red route is the longest and most difficult, 4,5 km. taking about three hours, with a viewing point 1.339 m. up where you can see the whole of the El Torcal Park and the Africa Coastline. At the park's parking area you will find an information centre, small museum, with an interesting of view of the wildlife, flora and fauna of the park. There is a good cafe.

The mountain range of Sierra Nevada appears just behind the city of Granada. It has the largest natural park in Spain, renowned for its icy slopes and remote villages. From November to May, Spaniards and tourists head here to ski and practice other winter sports like snowboarding. Those visiting outside of the ski season can still enjoy the scenery by taking a hike or exploring Las Alpujarras region with its charming Pueblo Blancos (whitewashed towns). Rivers, deep gorges and glacial lakes are some of the natural elements you'll encounter in this protected landscape, as well as several animal species like the Ibex.

City/town information

Home to the largest old town in Spain and the only city in the world to have four Unesco-protected sites, Córdoba is a must-visit for any traveller. Every May, it’s also the setting for the Feria de los Patios, the flower-centred festival celebrated nowhere else in the country. Here’s why you should visit Córdoba at least once, from its unique historic attractions to an exceptionally varied bar scene and warm, sunny climate. Nowhere is Andalucia’s Moorish-Christian heritage more powerfully on display than in Córdoba, with the star attraction being the Mosque-Cathedral, the only building of its kind in Spain. It features a 16th-century cathedral built in the middle of a 10th-century mosque. Other key sights include the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos – a palace built among the ruins of a Moorish fortress in the 14th century – a 16-arched Roman bridge and the remains of one of the greatest temples in the Roman Empire.

Food scene

Arte de Cozina’s owner and head chef Charo Carmona specialises in rediscovering and reinterpreting ancient Andalusian recipes, all of which are prepared in a kitchen visible from the dining room. Charo’s menu changes in accordance with seasonal ingredients but is always focused on hearty broths and stews known as caldosos, sopas (soups) and cazuelas (casseroles). Next door to the restaurant, there’s a smart tapas bar where you can enjoy smaller bites and superb wines. Prices average around €15 (£13.85) for a main course and €3 (£2.75) for a tapas, but Antequera’s best restaurant is worth the extra outlay.

Sightseeing

The Menga, Viera and El Romeral Dolmens – 5,000-year-old burial chambers that are among the most important megalithic structures in Europe – are situated on the outskirts of Antequera. Built between 3,500-3,000 BC, the 30-metre-long (98-feet-long) Menga Dolmen is the largest on the Continent and is walled in by stones weighing as much as 180 tonnes, which support the 250-tonne slabs used for the roof. If you’re wondering how the tombs’ prehistoric architects moved colossal weights with such precision, the 10-minute video shown in the interpretation centre reveals their ingenious techniques. All three Dolmens are free to visit.
