The Tuscan city of Siena is captivating and exhilarating. It's a flamboyant town of medieval buildings, dominated by Tuscany's tallest tower and the dazzling Duomo. The main artery is café-lined Piazza del Campo, where the Palio, a bareback horse race, is held every summer. On the south side of the square, elegant Palazzo Pubblico has been the seat of the city's government since the 13th century. The view from the top of the Torre del Mangia is spectacular. In summer, the city hosts the international Siena Jazz festival.

The Site Transitoire is a work of art, in the middle of the crete senesi between the Leonina and Mucigliani areas of the comune (municipality) of Asciano. In 1993, the French artist Jean-Paul Philippe created this stone sculpture, composed of several elements: a seat that welcomes the traveller, who can choose to sit, stand or lie on it, and a large window, inside which the sunlight is framed at sunset on the summer solstice. On the day of the solstice, the sun sets in the opening of the great stone window, creating a truly magical spectacle. The work is located in a quiet area, where art and nature meet, producing an incredible view across the crete senesi.

Above it and dominating the square, rises the tallest secular tower of medieval Italy, the graceful Torre del Mangia. You can climb all 503 steps to reach the great bell at its summit.
