Gorica is the biggest hill in Podgorica and, at the same time, city got its name from it. Podgorica literally means “under Gorica”. It is a green oasis in the middle of the city. Temperature is always lower during summer, and the air is much more fresh. You can see people walking, jogging, cycling or just chilling out.

Roman town Doclea is the most significant ancient locality in Montenegro. It is 4 km far away from Podgorica, up the river Moraca. It was situated on the wide flat plateau between the rivers Zeta, Moraca and Siralija Creek.
The strategic position was the main reason why the town was built at this specific place. The space bordered by three river basins was unapproachable during almost the whole year because high water level, and protected by upright cliffs and very easy to defend. Although it was defended by nature and protected by rivers, it was fortified by mighty walls, towers and bastions which surrounded plateau on which the town was situated.

Town-fortress Medun is situated in 13 km from Podgorica. At the beginning of III - end of IV centuries BC town Medun (or Meteon) was one of the main settlements of Illyrian tribe, who ruled the entire area of Skadar Lake basin. This fortress was of great strategic importance, from a high cliff, on which the fortifications were built, the territory in the direction of Podgorica and Tsemovskoe field was clearly-visible.
In structure of modern historical-cultural complex Medun, in addition to the remains of the Illyrian fortress, includes the Church of St. Nicholas of the XVIII century and native house of governor Marco Milyanov, which now is arranged as a memorial museum.
