Drinks & Nightlife

The Finikoudes sea-front promenade hosts dozens of restaurants, with outside eating areas during the warmer months, where you can stop for a coffee or an ice cream any time, or have a meal. Most of them are generic restaurants designed for tourists, with a mixture of Cypriot and English food, generally accompanied by chips and perhaps a bit of salad. The quality is usually pretty good and the service reasonable. They’re good places to relax, to enjoy the view of the beach, and to stay as long as you like.

The Ancient Kition is located in the north west of Larnaca and features some temples that date back to 13th century B.C. The ones that are worth visiting are the Phoenician Temple of Astarte and the city walls. The ruins of the temple were built on an earlier Bronze Age temple and are dedicated to goddess Astarte. One can also find some remains of tombs made from gold, ivory and bronze.

The Larnaca Castle is a Medieval Ottoman fortress, located in the south of Finikoudes promenade. The castle was founded by Europeans in the 14th century, when Lusignans were running the country, and later rebuilt by Turks, who used it to protect the city harbor. After Britain had come to power in 1878 and up to 1948 the castle was used as a police office and a jail, where death penalties were enforced. When the police office opened on the other side of the street, the castle finally became a historical museum, where archaeological finds, arms and household items discovered during the archaeological excavations of Kition, are exhibited. Various cultural events are held at the castle today.

Parks & Nature

Larnaka Salt Lake is the second largest salt-lake in Cyprus and measures 2.2 square kilometres. In 1997 it was declared a protected area under Cypriot Law for the Protection and Management of Nature and Wildlife and under the European Habitats Directive. It is a significant Ramsar and Natura 2000 site – one of the most significant biotopes in Europe - and one of the most important habitats in Europe for waterfowl. During the winter, the lake fills with water and is home to migrating birds, including thousands of flamingos that stay between November and March, along with wild ducks and other water or shore fowl that find refuge here on their migratory journeys.
