The natural starting point to any visit to Dubrovnik, this fabulous city gate was built in 1537. While crossing the drawbridge, imagine that this was once lifted every evening, the gate closed and the key handed to the rector. Notice the statue of St Blaise, the city’s patron saint, set in a niche over the Renaissance arch. After passing through the outer gate you'll come to an inner gate dating from 1460, and soon after you’ll be struck by the gorgeous view of the main street, Placa, or as it’s commonly known, Stradun, Dubrovnik’s pedestrian promenade.

In the end of Placa (Stradun) street, beside Luža, on the left side of the square centered with Orlando column the monumental Gothic-Renaissance Sponza Palace found its rightful place. Sponza is one of the most beautiful palaces in the City, which has preserved its original form. Built 1516-1522, its form suggests possible appearance of the majority of public and private palaces in Dubrovnik before the earthquake of 1667. Sponza palace derived it's name from the word for the spot where rainwater was collected (Spongia-”alluvium”) according to the former use of the spot it was built on. Sveti Jakov Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Dubrovnik is located at the eastern part of Dubrovnik Town in the tiny bay offering a distant look to the Lokrum and Old Town. It is situated about a mile away of the Old Town so you can reach it either by foot or by bus no. 5. If you take the bus wait until the last stop where you get off the bus as beach is just few hundred meters away, down the hill. Once you arrive near the Sv. Jakov church which is situated on the top of the cliff, just around the corner of the church is a staircase to descend down to the Beach. There are about 160 steps to the beach and i must say – getting back can be a bit of a pain.

The island of Koločep lies at a distance of 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) from the closest point on the mainland and about the same distance from the peninsula of Lapad, further east towards the city of Dubrovnik itself. The port of Dubrovnik (Gruž) is situated at the base of a bay on the other side of Lapad, requiring a 5 kilometres (3 miles) journey by boat to the island. The island can be reached by regular ferry service Jadrolinija – the "Postira" and "Premuda" services connect the Elaphiti Islands several times throughout the day. It is a 20-minute boat ride from one port to the other (Dubrovnik–Koločep) by ferry, or 10 minutes by water taxi.
