Beaches

Here are some of our favorite beaches
This is a semi private beautiful black sand beach where I have personally seen whales breach. You will need to get there early by 8:30 to get one of the 20 parking passes. Tell the gate guard you would like shore access. Location: 49 Black Sand Beach is located on a volcanic bay near Mauna Lani Resort. Access: To get to 49 Black Sand Beach, exit the Queen K Highway in the direction of Mauna Lani Beach Resort. Take the third exit in the road circle towards the Beach Club and continue for a half mile. The entrance to the beach will be on the left. Visitors are required to stop at the guard shack and request a beach pass. The beach rarely has more than a dozen people at a time, but it is still best to come in the morning as the number of beach passes is limited. Conditions: The entry into the water is steep and in the winter the shore break can be dangerous. Always use common sense. Black Sand Beach's sand is composed primarily of fine grains of lava. The water is clear and offers beautiful snorkeling conditions. Amenities: Bathrooms, Shower

Kua Bay is one of my favorite beaches with its beautiful views and soft sand. It's great for chilling and swimming. Get there early to avoid the crowds and get a good parking spot.

This is a beautiful white sand beach for sun bathing. Many people also boogie board and swim here but watch the shore break it can be very dangerous. I like to come here in the mornings to grab a coffee and watch the waves.

City/town information

Hilo has historic charm and museums, galleries, gardens, hole in the wall eateries and shops. We love the Tsunami Museum that tells the personal stories of those who survived the Tsunami of May 23,1960. One of my favorite coffee shops is Nectar. Liliuokolani Gardens and Coconut is always great for a stroll. Up the road are many small beaches that are local favorites.

Hawi is a quaint little town that is the turn around for Iron Man. We like to come up here to to to Keokea Park and watch the waves crash, stop at the coffee Mill and take in the Farmer's Market on Sat. morning. You can also see a statue of King Kamehameha who was born here.

This was the highlight for my trip to the Hilo side. The garden has a wonderful bamboo walkway that leads you gingerly to the bay. The plants and flowers that you see on the way are amazing. Pack a raincoat or umbrella since it mists a lot

Captain Cook

This is the famous Coffee Shack with great coastline views and resident geckos to feed.
The Coffee Shack has great food and views. An additional perk are the geckos you can feed. We recommend breakfast and dessert (Lilikoi cheese cake).
