The Kloof Lifestyle Centre is the hub of Kloof Street’s daytime activities. It’s great for when you need to pick up groceries and wine, or stop off for a bite to eat. It’s home to a Woolworths, a Knead, a Kauai, as well as a Wellness Warehouse that hosts a health café with a great lunch menu. Make sure to stop at Wine Concepts which have a fantastic wine selection - my personal favourite being the Putfontein Pinotage.

If you’re looking for Cape Town’s best burger then there are plenty of contenders. Every local has their favourite—but Hudsons is almost always included in the conversation. The Kloof street location is this small burger chain’s flagship store—the one that started it all—and with its big selection of gourmet burgers and beer, it’s easy to see why.

Technically Kyoto Garden is not on Kloof Street, it’s on the adjacent Kloof Nek Road. But they’re so close in name and geographical location that we thought it would be OK to include Cape Town’s best Japanese restaurant in this list. This restaurant offers outstanding sushi and a selection of Japanese food that includes an incredible miso soup. It’s worth going just for the drinks menu—there’s Japanese beer, Japanese single malt whiskey, and sake on offer.

At the foot of Cape Town’s vibrant Kloof Street, risen from a fairy-lit garden, lies a dining oasis. Set in a magnificent Victorian house, Kloof Street House is an experience as enigmatic as it is intimate. The venue is everything for every occasion – live jazz over Sunday lunch, romantic candle lit dinners in our dining rooms or cocktails under the trees in our garden. Our delicious meals, cozy ambiance and friendly staff will make you feel right at home. Our brasserie-style menu is the expression of a love for creating delicious meals and a consciousness of our ingredients and where they come from. All of our meat is free-range, grass-fed and responsibly sourced. In true homely fashion, we believe in bringing people together over feasts and great conversation. The location is not wonderful, but the food is to die for. The Cousins Trattoria was an idea created by Andrea, Simone and Luca who wanted to bring their knowledge and passion for food to Cape Town. These cousins from Romagna, on the Adriatic coast of Italy, have lived in (and loved) Cape Town for many years, but felt there was not a place in the city where they could find the simple, authentic Italian food they had grown up with, in their homeland. So joining their skills, they opened The Cousins Trattoria, where Andrea makes fresh pasta every morning, using only fresh and natural ingredients, just like Mama does! Bread and tiramisu are baked daily; great coffee and a passion for service makes this easy going place a heaven for the senses.

Hidden in a charming courtyard, this innercity watering hole is housed in a heritage building that used to be a mortuary, which informs the menu and interiors. Choose to sit in the tiny Embalming Room (tucked in a corner), or the more spacious Chapel Room and order one of the five quack remedies (cocktails). If you’d rather go for a straight-up G&T, there are 140 gins to choose from (80 of which are local). Gin not your thing? There’s wine and beer, too.

An all-day eatery that serves up inventive contemporary comfort food in a relaxed seaside setting that’s as friendly as it is fashion-forward. Located on the Mouille Point ‘Golden Mile’, locals breeze in to their new neighbourhood ‘happy place’ for coffee, breakfast or lunch, and come cocktail hour, the after-work drinks crowd settles in for sundowners and sumptuous sunset dinners overlooking the Atlantic. The unique modern menu emphasizes health and showcases fresh, locally sourced produce, without taking itself too seriously. Like the eclectic menu, decor is a whimsical combo of smart, crisp, contemporary styling with some quirky surprises.

Internationally renowned chef Franck Dangereux is widely recognised as one of the forerunners of the fine-dining scene in Cape Town, having established the original La Colombe restaurant on Uitsig farm over 20 years ago. Franck’s next adventure was starting The Foodbarn in Noordhoek Farm Village: “I wanted to bring fine dining to the streets.” Here, diners are treated to decadent seasonal cuisine in a relaxed, family-friendly (and even dog-friendly) environment! Franck’s roots in southern France inform his hearty, earthy style (bouillabaisse, slow-stewed tripe and trotters), but it is the bonhomie of this converted barn, with its farm-inspired decor, and the relaxed Noordhoek Village vibe that make dining here a wonderful day out for the entire clan. Choose between the relaxed Café or Bistronomy menus, (vegetarian and plant-based options, too). From Tuesday to Saturday, the Café transforms into an atmospheric Tapas Bar with incredible dishes to delight.

Perched on a mountainside in Camps Bay, Himitsu (“secret” in Japanese) is simply too good not to share. Owned by Cheyne Morrisby, his latest culinary offering majors in lip-smacking flavours, but its utterly dreamy setting – even by global standards – in a discreet hotel on a private nature reserve in Camps Bay overlooking the expansive Atlantic Ocean – is what elevates it. The small-plates menu, divided into four sections – Ichi, Ni, San, Shi – is a journey of pan-Asian deliciousness. Think Chilli Salt Squid, with cajun furikake (umami-packed Japanese seasoning) and Lucky Duck Caesar (Chinese cabbage, crispy duck, quails egg and anchovy toasted nori), with dessert options such as miso ice cream and dark-chocolate fondant (not exactly Asian, but a favourite among South African restaurant goers).

It has established itself as the luxurious venue that has played host to world famous celebrities over the past four decades, including Sting, Marlene Dietrich, B.J, Vorster and ex-South African president, Thabo Mbeki. The 1970’s fish tank deign, coupled with its beachfront location and elegant dining area with classic wood-carved chairs, and outstanding food have all contributed to its status as one of the finest restaurants in Cape Town. Our familiar Chefs Warehouse set menu format of contemporary tapas sharing in 4 courses draws inspiration from the endless Atlantic ocean views. Ingredients are sourced from a selection of small, sustainable local suppliers with a focus on marine produce, a homage to the ocean that gently enfolds this exceptional boutique hotel at the foot of Chapman’s Peak Drive. As with our sister restaurants, oysters and risotto are always on our menu. Despite the distinct seafood note in the menu, which changes daily according to season and the catch, we gladly cater for vegetarian or vegan palates when notified via your booking.

You won’t find lasagne on the menu at Scala…. which is exactly the point! This hot, new underground New York-style pasta bar deliberately does not serve your mamma’s pasta. They’re riffing on the sharing-plate dining style, where you get to taste all the dishes, a fabulous procession of different styles and interpretations of Italy’s beloved staple. The vibe is urban and happening: black walls, tan-leather booths and seats, a spotlit open kitchen and a bustling bar producing a sparkling raft of signature cocktails. Consultant chef Luciano Monosilio, Italy’s youngest chef to earn a Michelin star (for his former restaurant Pipero al Rex in Rome), devised Scala’s menu concept. A longtime friend of Scala’s owners, Luciano has generously taught the team (headed up by executive chef Justin Barker) his signature spaghetti alla carbonara – lavish with the smoothly rich golden sauce, added salt and crunch from crispy morsels of guanciale (pork cheek), a creative refinement of the classic.

Wednesday Nights (Nov-Mar) 5-9pm (limited market); Saturdays 8.15am-2pm (full market); Sundays 9am-2pm (full market). The site for the Oranjezicht City Farm is located next to the corner of Sidmouth Avenue and Upper Orange Street, Oranjezicht, adjacent to Homestead Park. Previously a bowling green constructed in the 1950s and unused for decades, this site comprises part of the original farm, ‘Oranje Zigt’, established in 1709, and which became the largest farm in the Upper Table Valley in the 19th century. Fed by a cluster of springs that provided perennial fresh water to Khoekhoen pastoralists as well as to sailors and the Company’s Gardens from the 17th century, this farm grew vegetables and fruit that fed the growing settlement and colony and supplied passing ships with essential produce to the turn of the 20th century. Swallowed by urban expansion, the productive farmlands were converted to a housing syndicate in 1901 and the original homestead standing on the site was demolished in 1957 to construct a bowling green, which fell into disuse and neglect in recent decades. Boasting stunning sea views, the market is covered by tents and pergolas, ensuring shelter from the elements. You’ll find fresh-from-the-patch veggies and herbs – it’s worth doing your weekly grocery shop here – as well as seasonal fruit, bread, cheese, organic dairy products, free-range eggs, raw honey, muesli, and ethically sourced meats and seafood. There is also a lifestyle section, selling an array of carefully curated clothing, décor, ceramics, vintage items, pet accessories, houseplants and farm-to-vase flowers.

Cape Town definitely has no shortage of amazing beaches, but Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins in all their smartly dresses, waddling glory, right under your nose. In fact, it’s the only place in the world where you can get close to African Penguins. Boulders Beach isn’t just a great place for penguins, it’s also a popular family-friendly swimming beach where kids can climb over the boulders, explore the rock pools, or swim in the cool, clear False Bay water. It’s also a great place for a leisurely picnic. Due to the R65 conservation fee, the beach is rarely packed. If you’d like to learn more about the area’s famous inhabitants, be sure to pop over to the Boulders Visitors Centre where expert guides will give you tonnes of interesting information about Africa’s own, unique penguins.

The Cape is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world – scenic stretches of honeyed sand or cool coves that beckon on sunny weekends. One such spectacular spot is Llandudno Beach, where a picturesque strip of white-sand beach is hugged between large boulders, creating the perfect space for groups of families, friends and avid surfers to spend their days lazing in the sun. The sunsets are unmatched, while the water (ridiculously cold) offers unmatched refreshment on hot summer days. Good to know Those seeking a more intimate experience will love the peaceful cove at Beta Beach in Bakoven. Since there are no waves, the water is perfect for snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and shallow dips. Sheltered from the wind, the bay is also the place to be when the pesky southeaster strikes. Where to find it Victoria Road, Llandudno, Cape Town 7 Beira Road, Bakoven, Cape Town

The sugar-white sand of Clifton 4th Beach is usually sardine packed with beautiful people everywhere. Of all four spectacular Clifton beaches, this is the top beach spot for people watching, sunbathing, beach volleyball, frisbee and barbecues. On calm days you’ll see a flotilla of yachts anchored close to shore – braaing their catch of kreef (crayfish or Cape rock lobster) with a glass of Cape bubbly in hand. If you’re brave enough to venture into the frigid water there are some crashing waves to bodysurf. Clifton 4th Beach is conveniently just a stroll away from La Med, one of the Mother City’s best outdoor bars and clubs. If the South Easter is howling then Clifton 4th Beach is your best beach option with wind protection from the spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles. Awarded Blue Flag Beach status, Clifton 4th Beach is the most southerly beach of a series of small sandy coves in this upmarket suburb on the western seashore of Table Bay. Be prepared for a little exercise – access to the beach is down a series of steep, winding, narrow stairs that make it inaccessible for disabled visitors.
