Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa stands in the middle of the village and was built in the form of a Medieval Castle around 1500 AD. The monastery was restored in 1950 and in 1978 became an Ecumenical Conference Centre, serving churches in Cyprus. The monastery is partially built underground and cut into the rock, surrounded by a high wall. It is dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests’, with the name coming from the Ancient Greek word for wooded valley (‘Napa’) as a result of the area’s past topography.

Beaches

Nissi Beach is probably the most popular beach in the resort of Ayia Napa. The beach stretches for 500 metres and the water is clean enough for the beach to have been awarded the blue flag designation. The beach, which runs the length of its own cove, takes its name from the small islet of Nissi (Greek: Νησί) located close to the coast. The uninhabited islet can be easily reached on foot through the shallow waters and its location provides a good shelter for the rest of the beach. Facilities on the beach include toilets, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas and water sports facilities, and visitors can find plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels in the area.

Macronissos Beach is actually 3 beaches in one. The main beach is long with golden sand and is flanked by two smaller bays also with golden sand and clear waters. These beaches are found at the western edge of Ayia Napa and always attract a mix of tourists and local people. The atmosphere is laid back making them ideal for relaxing in the sun with a good book. The beaches are also popular with families with young children due to the gently shelving sands and calm atmosphere. Watersports are available as well as a snack bar for refreshments. The beaches are reachable from Nissi Avenue by car or bicycle and are also at the end of the bus route which terminates at the nearby Waterworld Waterpark. During the winter kite surfers can occasionally be seen here if the winds are right.

To reach the beach, visitors can either take this road which leads to a small car park, or use the steps which lead down from the Grecian Park Hotel at the top of the cliff. A small cafe bar nestled in the pine trees is available for refreshments and there are numerous watersports available including a wide range of inflatables such as ringo's, flying fish and bananas as well as motorised sports.
