The Mauna Kea Summit and Observatory is a must see destination. Whether you are a novice star gazer or astronomical expert, few places on earth will get you feeling closer to the universe than atop of the Mauna Kea summit! Experience the sunset views looking towards Kona or the morning sunrise looking towards Hilo. Views are extraordinary during daylight hours and the nighttime star viewing is unparalleled, unless raining or overcast. Dress for the weather change! Light to mid-range insulated clothing is recommended, as the temperature is much cooler and oftentimes windy. 4X4 vehicles are mandatory to drive all the way up to the summit. 4X2 should get you to the observatory.

This one of the most stunning overlooks you find anywhere on the Big Island. If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you can take a drive down into the lower valley to see the distant Hiilawe Waterfall or explore the Waipio Black Sand beach. The narrow road that winds its way down into the valley is very steep and vehicles must take turns yielding to each other, as it is only one-lane wide.

Come for the waterfall but stay for the giant Banyan tree. This park boasts two awesome natural landmarks. The waterfall is a short hike from the parking lot. Early morning visits are the best for viewing an actual "rainbow" at the base of the falls. Explore the path that heads off to the left of the falls to witness one of the largest Banyan trees you will see on the Big Island. Many visitors take time to climb into the towering tree- with some letting out their inner Tarzan or Jane spirit!
