The Rim restaurant at Volcano House is inside the National Park and has a STUNNING view of the lava lake. Try to get a reservation right before nightfall so that you can see the view during the day and the lava glow as night falls. The Rim is more formal dining. There is a lounge in Volcano House that offers the same view with more casual dining and a bar.

Don't Forget a Sweatshirt

Many visitors think of Hawaii as perpetually warm, but up at altitude it gets quite cool. Definitely be sure to have a sweatshirt and some long pants. The gift shop at Volcano House also sells sweatshirts if you find yourself in a chill.

Pick Up Groceries in Hilo

There is no grocery store in Volcano, only a small convenience store. The closest grocery store is Foodland in Kea'au, about a 20 minute drive away. For your convenience, consider stopping at Safeway in Hilo or Foodland on your way into Volcano. If you are coming from Kona/Waikoloa and are coming along the highway on the west coast, consider stopping at Choice Mart in Captain Cook. They are a great local grocery store.
