Best beach in the area--pebbly black sand beach, offers both surf and a calm river mouth to swim with kids or float around on a hot day. Explore the stream for native oopu and hihiwai. The road is closed off to cars due to a damaged bridge, but is accessible and well used by pedestrians--just walk around the gate. For the more adventurous a steep stone staircase is built into the cliff all the way down to the beach, making a beautiful, if somewhat steep hike (not scary at all). To find the stairs, instead of walking around the gate, just wander a little closer to the overlook and you will see the beginning of a trail, that hits the stairs in 20 m or so. Warning--surf can be fierce when there is a North swell, and the river can be strong after a hard rain, causing a current out to the point. There are no lifeguards, so be cautious.

Food scene

Shockingly good food and bakery items in a quaint country store. Closed Sundays. If you’re exploring North, grab a breakfast burrito, bagel deluxe, local/American lunch favorites, or my favorite ono fish tacos and homemade onion rings! Store has lots of convenience items and snack food too.
