Give the fried green tomatoes, pork belly, spaghetti & meatballs a try, and most definitely, the grits and shrimp! Mmmm. Many good desserts, also. Another favorite are the bison burgers. Best liquor store in the Helen area! They have, hands down, the best selection, prices and very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I love going in to browse and see what’s on special. You can find some sweet deals there, too! They’re also open pretty late for around these parts.

Unicoi State Park is a beautiful, 1,050-acre state park, just outside of Helen. The park is especially popular in fall. There's a trail that begins in Downtown Helen, near the library, which runs 3 miles to Unicoi Lodge, where lunch is served. It's mostly flat and is pet-friendly. There is also a white, sandy beach at 53-acre Unicoi Lake for swimmers to enjoy! $$ (706-878-3982)

Located just a few miles west of Helen, Raven Cliff Falls is one of the area's most visually stunning (and most visited) natural landmarks. This 60-foot cascade falls over the steep facade that makes up Raven Cliff, producing a stunning showcase of nature's beauty and might. Getting to the falls from the pull-off area requires a moderate, 2.5-mile hike along a creek-side trail. Keep your camera handy --- you'll pass plenty of ferns, lilies, and geraniums as you make your way up Dodd Creek to the waterfall's base. $ (706-782-3320)
