Food & drink in Saxmundham

Please check operating days and times, as you'll find most pubs, cafes and restaurants in the Suffolk area have limited hours and are most often closed Monday evenings.
The Poachers Pocket is a crowd pleaser and a lovely and leisurely half-hour stroll from the airbnb. Walking through the countryside (there are two routes on Google maps but take the scenic route) as the sun sets is a magical experience. Their food and drink menu is quite expansive and tasty. When the weather's nice it's lovely to sit in the garden under the fairy lights. Otherwise the roaring fire is equally delightful.

Luckily the nearest pub in town - literally less than 100 yards from you - is also a hotel and has lovely food, lovely cocktails and wine and friendly staff. It's a bit on the pricey side but worth it, we think. We hear their breakfast is especially good!

Don't be fooled by the photo, which shows its sister branch in Yoxford (very close to Saxmundham), whereas we are speaking about the little branch that has opened in Saxmundham town centre. Weirdly it's not (yet?) on Google maps so you have to trust us on this one. Walk toward Waitrose and some three minutes later you'll find it. Great coffee, great pastries and great sourdough bread.

What a gem of a cafe! We knew it back when they sold just coffee (excellent lattes) and cruellers in an adorable space next to the farm shop but now they've expanded their menu and are now housed in the barn. They are only open Thursdays through Sundays. We love cycling some 15 minutes up a slight incline but driving is always an option.

Shops, activities & fun in Saxmundham

As with restaurants and cafes, many shops, events and activities have limited hours of operations. Many open, for example, Thursday to Saturday, so do check before heading out.
If you're into antiques and vintage items like we are, and it kills you to pay the earth for them, we'd highly recommend the Yoxford Antiques Centre. We can spend the better part of the afternoon there browsing through all the various rooms, and they also have a cafe on site. A little over four miles, or a ~10 min drive.

After the car boot sale - or disregarding it completely - nip across the road to the upmarket Friday Street farm shop, one of the largest in Suffolk, for a delectable picnic meal. Open seven days. Or stop by the cafe for a coffee or bite to eat. Don't miss the antique furniture shop behind it called The Barn (closed Wednesdays), with rooms of splendid treasures!

Provided you're willing to wake up on the early side - 7 am, anyone? though it goes until noon; Sundays only - there are loads of treasures to be gawked at, from enamelware drinks tubs to cheap retro art to wooden hangers and brand-new pillows, for an absolute bargain. Some of the vintage pieces in your airbnb just might have been sourced from this very place. Car required unless you're happy walking some 45 minutes each way.

How to describe this place? A world-class concert hall that also houses independent boutiques, a pub, cafes and eateries, not to mention the River Alde and surrounding marshes that you can do long walks across. A four-mile drive that might take you less than 10 minutes.

Your nearest beach and seaside town is definitely a worthwhile destination. Cycling takes half an hour through slight hills but the sea view is reward enough. Or it's a 15-minute drive. The high street has plentiful boutique shops, charity shops, restaurants and a cinema, and there is always a sizeable queue for the fish and chips and/or ice cream shop, weather dependent.
